Bombs Away!

One of the fourth grade science projects is an egg drop. It's at the end of the year so the kids can drop their protectors on the ground outside.

After various talked about options, Xela and Daddy took a bean can, emptied it, cut it in half and filled it with insulation foam to encase the egg. Vecro held the can together. One of the requirements was that you had to be able to get the egg in and out of the protector, so, once the insulation foam hardened, we busted out the egg, put in a fresh egg and climbed up a ladder leaned against our roof. Xela dropped it from about nine feet a few times and the egg survived. She was pretty excited to try it out in the extra credit competition.

Eric, the three younger ones and I arrived a little early and watched the set up. It was only a four foot ladder. Eric volunteered to go get a higher ladder next year. Mrs Yeoman didn't have a taller ladder that would fit in their car. Mrs Daughtery was the teacher that climbed up the ladder and dropped the eggs.

This was the first time that everyone survived the first round. The next two rounds were Mrs Daughtery throwing the protectors to the ground. Xela's wasn't the first one dead, but it did not survive. After the third round, I think there were five kids whose eggs survived.

Some of the projects were creative. One of the protectors was wrapping the egg in a bunch of plastic bags and then putting that in between a blanket, two pillows and a second cover all blanket. How are you supposed to throw that down from four feet. It's not going to fall hard. Another protector had a parachute and balloons tied to it. Again, how is that going to fall hard? We definately got ideas for Aurora's project next year.
