October 31 - A 5K and Candy

CCHA is a sponsor for the Lawrence Township Schools' fun run/walk that happens on October 31. As a sponsor, they were given ten registrations. I asked if I could run and bring Nate and Xela. There were no objections, so they signed up with me.
Xela was grounded because she had a B+ in a class so it was just Nate and I that went on the run. I was impressed at how well Nate did. We didn't walk as much as I thought we might have and he didn't really slow down for the first mile. After that we would walk a bit and then find a spot to jog too and go.
After the second mile, I turned on Pandora music on my phone. We both agreed that I should have done that earlier because it was motivation to keep running. We finished the third mile and then as soon as we saw the finish line, we put our boosters on and sprinted.
The times were posted online later that afternoon and, even though we crossed the line at the same time, the time posted put me a tenth of a second behind Nate. "I beat Mommy!" became his slogan for the day.

Nate the Great running buddy
Can't wait for our next run!
We did the 3.2 miles in about 35 minutes, which, again, is much better than I thought we would do. I need to start signing up for more of these, and bring a running buddy when possible!

That evening, of course, was trick or treating. As Graigry turns 12 this  year, it will be his last go round, then he will stay home with the older kids.
My little cell phone, princess and then some creature from
Harry Potter.
Last year, because it was freezing rain, we went to Little Flower's Halloween Bash which was indoors. This year, without the rain, we went to Irvington to collect unneeded calories. We went to Dunahee's and walked around with Myran, Myya and then Liam Turner and his mother Courtney joined us as well. Max Dunahee went around as a supervising adult. It was kind of fun to talk to him while we walked and trying to keep kids within reach.
Neta was given her princess dress, which was marvelous. Nate wanted to be something (I can't remember what), but I wasn't going to have time to make it so he was brainstorming while I kept trying to give Graigry different ideas of what to be.
Graigry wanted to be something scary, like the Grim Reaper and I didn't like that - why be scary when you can be creative? I kept rattling off ideas (which is where the cell phone idea came out that Nate grabbed onto) I guess being older, he wanted a costume that was more "big boy" than little kid. Did I mention this was his last year? HOORAY!
Xela had fun drawing some of the details of the cell phone (like the power, volume and camera buttons). The cell phone was much easier to get in and out of than the cardboard Mater that we created for Nate last year.
The kids had a good time and collected a sufficient amount of candy. We stayed out a little longer than I had planned, which typically happens, but oh well. I think we got home around 8:15, the kids dropped their pillowcases of goodies, changed and went to bed.

Cookout and Charcoal - Oct 17

Summer was unusually wet but the fall has been perfect for cookouts. When I don't feel like cooking on a Friday or Saturday, and we have enough time for a fire, brawts and hot dogs are what is on the menu. We used to have one of those metal fire pits, but over the years that has burned out and we have used cement to create out own pit. I created the current pit with busted up pieces of sidewalk that we unburied from a dirt pile. It's bigger and enclosed, unlike our cement alter fire "pit" that we had two years ago.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the kids cooking and then, as a form of entertainment, using the burnt end of sticks to write on the driveway. I love that my kids can make games and play with just about anything.
Time to prep the sticks with the dogs and cook
Apparently Graigry & Neta didn't like it
when smoke followed them
Graigry pulled out his trusty
"SMOKE" goggles to protect his eyes

He created his own caption :)
I guess they all wanted to practice
writing their names, as if school papers
wasn't enough practice. Then again,
school papers are written with burnt stick ends.
Finished product  :)

Have I mentioned that I love family time? And especially family time where we can just enjoy each other, where there isn't a routine (not that routines are bad) and you can take time to enjoy the blessings of family. Sometimes I wish I had a nicer (maybe just finished) house, had a newer car, or other stuff , but other times I just enjoy the things that matter most - like my family - and feel blessed with what I have been given.

Conner "Scarie" - Oct 15

There is a Smithsonian like museum-live action-interactive park in Fishers, Indiana called Conner Prairie. One of the partners at work sits on the Board of Directors and received 50 free tickets to the Halloween festivities called "Conner Scarie." He sent out an email to everyone asking if anyone wanted to use them. Due to the response, he decided to do a lottery and my name got pulled. I was excited as I knew it was something that the kids and I would enjoy. Eric would go along, but not find it very enjoyable.
So, after a few hours at the pumpkin patch, we came home to nap or do a few things for a couple of hours before heading to Fishers. The gates opened at 6. We stood in line for about 15-20 minutes (I'm a little obnoxious about being early unless I am familiar with the routine and know that early is not needed).
Xela did a little swing dancing with Neta;
others were on their phones and the boys played with cracks
in the parking lot.
Finally the gates opened and we got tickets for the Headless Horseman wagon ride for 6:30. I didn't think the little ones would appreciate a dark ride, and not having been there before, I (not a fan of haunted house like things) wasn't sure if I wanted to do it either. We had a few minutes before we needed to get into another line, so we went to a "preschool" tent to play with noise makers. Xela thought this tent was much more fun than "grown up" stuff.
Nate and Neta banging and shaking
Now you can see Graigry getting in on the noise;
Neta always with a pose
Xela always with the camera.
One day I should get the pictures that she takes
Kids seemed to enjoy banging things while listening to
Halloween type songs like "Ghostbusters!"
After that few minute diversion, we got into another line to wait for the Headless Horseman ride. While waiting, we listened to more songs, Xela and Neta did some more dancing...
I think we were trying to dance to "Thriller"
...Nate decided he didn't want anyone to recognize him...
Minion Man
...and there was some "scary-okey" in a tent nearby that also had a hula-hoop contest. The girls jumped in to hula, which was fun to watch. Neta did much better than the big girls.
Neta was one of the last ones to drop the hoop
Finally, the Headless line started to move. We had a walk towards Prairie Town, which is where the ride was staged and then waited again for the wagons to arrive. Once they did, we loaded up and headed on down the trail.

Not at all intimidated by the possibility of meeting
a headless horseman wielding a sword.
I don't think the ride would have been very scary, even in the dark. It was pretty cool to actually be able to see things as we rode through. There were two sections where Mr Headless came riding out behind the wagon. We were asked not to use flash photography as it would spook the horses, so I didn't get a picture. The kids thought it was kind of cool, but agreed that it would have been a little cooler if it wasn't daylight (evening light).

After the wagon ride, we went back to where the preschool things were because the kids wanted to see flying monkeys, ie: stuffed animals that were put in a slingshot that the kids pulled to initiate lift off. While some waited in line to do that, others ran and rolled down the hills where the summer amphitheater is.

The volunteers are prepping the monkey

Nate's turn
Neta and Graigry wait their opportunity
I think my kids are down there;
I can't tell (or remember) now.
They also had a "slide" that the kids absolutely loved. Xela and Ro had just as much fun as the younger ones and kept trying new ways to slide. The volunteer in charge didn't seem to care that they didn't use the potato sack provided. Their shirts and jackets worked just as well. I have more video than pictures, so I'll have to try to put those up later (after I get them off my phone).
Ready to slide??!!!
Patiently waiting their turn.
Thankfully, it wasn't a long wait and
it was uncrowded so they could go down
again and again and again!
They had Disney's "The Tale of Ichabod Crane" playing every so often and because we missed the start of one, we decided to follow the "Scarecrow Trail." By now it was dark, but the variety of scarecrows were lit throughout the trail. There were even some elementary school kids dressed up as scarecrows that attempted to scare travelers (it was kind of cute). The scarecrow was the best one of the bunch:
Jack and the Scotts
(Jack is from "The Nightmare before Christmas")
We still had some time to pass, so we went in by the hot air balloon and played a few "educational" type games.

Kind of like air hockey, but
they were air balloons and you used air
to keep it from landing in your spot.
There were enough spaces that the whole
family could play.
On our way to the outdoor showing of the movie, we came across this dead body...
Who is that???
...she looked a little familiar, but no one wanted to carry the extra weight or become contaminated with whatever caused her demise. :)

It was an overall fun day with family! I love taking time off work and making memories with family. We left Conner Prairie around nine o'clock and headed home. Thankfully, the weather had been hoodie perfect - no rain, no real wind and just layers required. Kids enjoyed themselves, we at apples and sandwiches on our way home and then crashed in our beds upon arrival. :)

Pumpkin Patch October 15, 2015

Kids are getting older, but so far this is a tradition that we haven't lost yet! I took October 15 and 16 off from work and we went to the pumpkin patch on the 15th. The kids still have fun so that makes it fun for me. :)

HOW TALL THIS FALL
Last year, because we apparently went too early, I didn't get our traditional pumpkin pictures (sad face). This year, I made sure we weren't too early.
Xela is my assistant photographer.
One of these days I'll have to get
the pictures off her camera.
Aurora - 14 years old
The first picture had an apple being
thrown in the middle of the picture.
Graigry - 12 (almost)
His growth hormone is really helping him
shoot up. Just a few inches
and he'll be as tall as me
(who is just over the 5 ft mark)
Nate - 9 years old
It looks like he's trying to stretch himself
as tall as possible.
Neta - age 8

TRACTOR TIME!

I think Graigry's face in this one is great!
I can't remember why the face though

What did I just say about the camera?
I think we were waiting for the big girls to get on top.
"To infinity and..."oh wait, those boots say Woody, not Buzz.

Super Scotts ready for take off!

Graigry is standing on the other side of the hay bale.
They stack several on top of each other and this is the top.

SPINNING PUMPKIN
I can't ride in this thing; I would have puked. Eric got in with them and spun them silly. They love it!

Ready to vomit?!
I heard joyful screams for about three minutes,
then the ride was over.

Hiding in the Hay
They have a hay maze, different from the haystack, that used to be darker, but the kids have fun crawling around in it. I went inside and found myself a little cubby hole where I could sit up and the kids posed for a few pictures.

The Cool Kid in the Hay
She wanted to know if this could be her new room - um, no.
Peek-a-boo!
Ro found another spot where she could
'Hay'ng out. :)

THE CORN MAZE!!!
This is one of our favorite parts of the pumpkin patch! Each kid gets a turn to decide which way we go, whenever we get to a fork in the path. Sometimes, they purposefully point in the direction that we have already been, especially if it's going to get a reaction from a sibling. Occasionally a parent will override a retreading of the trodden path, but mostly we just go with it. I always have to take a "hidden picture" of the kids in the corn.

This is the face of an annoyed sibling
trying to dictate the next direction,
having already beaten down this path
a few too many times.
And Nate is OFF!!
Mom (not pictured) and Dad
pulling up the rear of the Scott party
"This way!!!"
Xela is the hardest one to find, don't you think?
"Ta! DA!"
The kids created their own path through
the maze to the other side.
Neta decided she was going to sit down
and start drawing in the middle of a corn field

Petting Farm Animals

"Nice goat!"Graigry & Nate making new friends

Then the llama came over to say hi.
"Are you going to feed me too?"
I love watching the kids' reactions to the
animals actions.
The kids could sit here for hours.
The goat whisperer with some feed.
I think Ro was able to get some feed from
someone that bought it and then the kid
didn't want to use it.

TO PICK THE PERFECT PUMPKIN!
Because of all the rain we had during June, the pumpkins at Waterman's farm on Raymond Street did not harvest. So they went to their Greenwood farm, packed up some pumpkins from there and then set them on the ground back at Raymond Street farm. It wasn't as fun, pumpkins sitting on dirt instead of having to watch out for pumpkin vines, but we couldn't NOT get pumpkins.

I didn't want to spend $50 on pumpkins, so I told the kids they had to keep them small - the usual "if you can carry it, you can take it" rule was void and the kids were pretty good to go smaller. I think I only had to pay $30-$35 and they each were able to have a pumpkin.

Where can the perfect one be?

"Is this one good, Mommy?"
The fact that he is having NO problem
carrying it, is a step in the right direction.

one will win the "perfect pumpkin" award
and be brought home.
Graigry found one that looked like a minion
and his decision was made quickly.

Why the sad face - I don't know
